Dogs at the beach: 5 golden rules for a perfect day
Summer is the perfect time to take a break from work and enjoy the sun, relaxation, and… the company of our four-legged friend! More and more people are choosing to spend their vacation with their dog, taking them to the beach to share unforgettable moments. But how can you ensure that your faithful companion also experiences the day at the beach safely and happily?
Here are 5 golden rules for making the most of vacations with dogs at the beach.
1. Avoid the hottest hours
When going on vacation with your dog to the beach, it is essential to avoid peak hours, between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. Excessive heat can be dangerous, especially for brachycephalic breeds (like bulldogs) or puppies. Choose early morning or late afternoon to take them to the beach.
2. Fresh water always available
During your vacation with dogs, ensure they always have access to clean, fresh water. Bring a travel bowl and remember to offer them a drink often. Prevent them from drinking saltwater: it can cause intestinal issues and dehydration.
3. Choose pet-friendly beaches
Not all beaches accept dogs on vacation. Look for well-equipped, dog-friendly facilities where our furry friends are welcome. On these beaches, you will find reserved umbrellas, showers, and often even areas dedicated to playing in the water.
4. Protect their paws (and skin!)
Hot sand can burn your dog’s paws. Walk only on shaded paths or wet their paws regularly. For dogs with light-colored fur or sensitive areas, there are specific sunscreens that protect the skin from the sun.
5. Bring light snacks and wet food
During dog vacations, nutrition plays an important role. Favor wet food, which is rich in water and easier to digest in the heat. Also, bring along natural, light snacks, perfect as a reward after a swim or a walk.
