Does your dog move less in the cold? Here’s how to avoid weight gain

When the cold weather arrives, your dog’s lifestyle changes too

With November and the first cold days, we are not the only ones who prefer the sofa to long walks. Our dogs also tend to move less: they sleep more, play less outdoors and, if it rains or is cold, they go out less.

All of this can lead to a decrease in energy expenditure and, if their diet remains the same, a progressive increase in weight. But with a few simple steps, it is possible to keep your friend fit and healthy even in winter.

1. Check portions (without letting them go hungry)

The first step to preventing weight gain is to adjust the amount of food based on their level of physical activity.
If your dog goes for fewer walks or plays less, you can slightly reduce the daily portion of their food.

Respet tip: observe your dog’s physique! You should be able to feel their ribs easily under a light layer of fat, but not see them.

Respet food has balanced formulas that help maintain an ideal weight without sacrificing taste or digestive health.

2. Choose filling but light foods

Not all foods have the same effect on satiety.
Opt for food with:

- High percentages of high-quality protein (chicken, salmon, lamb)

- Vegetable fiber that aids digestion

- Good fats like omega 3 and 6 to support metabolism and the coat

3. Maintain a movement routine

Even if it’s cold, movement remains essential.
You can adapt physical activity to the season:

- Shorter but more frequent walks

- Interactive indoor games (ball, treat-seeking, brain games)

- Light training sessions to stimulate body and mind

An active dog is a happy dog — and they burn more calories even in winter!

4. Be careful with “extra” snacks

During winter, it’s easy to give in to cuddles... even at the table.
Biscuits, leftovers, and excessive snacks can compromise your dog’s diet.
It is better to opt for natural and light treats, perhaps based on dehydrated meat or fruit.

5. Periodically check their weight

Weighing your dog once a month is a good habit: small changes can be corrected immediately, avoiding the risk of actual obesity.
If you notice that they are gaining weight easily, ask your vet for advice: they may suggest a specific food that you can find on Respet

- Limit extra snacks and “treats”
