How to help dogs and cats get back into a routine after the break

Holidays are a special time for us and our four-legged friends: more time together, longer walks, relaxed days, and often less rigid schedules. However, when returning to the daily routine, dogs and cats can feel disoriented and may exhibit stress or unusual behaviors.
Here are some practical tips to help them regain balance and serenity.

Reintroduce regular meal times

During the holidays, it is common for meal times to shift. Returning to fixed schedules is essential: it helps the animal feel secure and stabilizes their metabolism. Stay consistent with your schedule, in line with your new daily routine.

Check the portions

If extra snacks or "table scraps" were given during the holidays, gradually reduce the amount until you return to normal portions. Avoid abrupt cuts: it is better to scale back little by little to avoid creating frustration or digestive issues.

Use food as mental stimulation

Not just for nourishment: food can become an ally against boredom. Distribute meals using interactive toys, snuffle mats, or slow-feeder bowls. For cats, scattering kibble in different areas of the house encourages them to move and "hunt."

Reward in moderation

Treats remain important for reinforcing positive behaviors, but it is best to choose healthy snacks and dose them judiciously. You can also replace part of their daily ration with the treats used as rewards.

Pay attention to body signals

Returning to a sedentary lifestyle after days full of walks can lead to weight gain. Regularly check your dog or cat’s physique and, if you notice significant changes, consult your veterinarian about recalibrating their diet or physical activity.

Combine movement and nutrition

Regular walks and active playtime go hand in hand with a balanced diet. For dogs, alternate short outings with longer walks. For cats, stimulate daily play with feathers, balls, or tunnels, helping them burn off energy.

Returning to a routine isn't just about schedules and walks, but also about how dogs and cats experience mealtime. Regular, stimulating, and balanced nutrition, combined with movement and daily attention, will help them feel serene and fit again.
